Christians and Yoga

The debate rages on…can a Christian practice Yoga? I don’t really want to get into this but I will because I like the physical benefits of the stretches used in yoga. So there you go, you know I am going to be writing from a biased point of view.

First of all, what is Yoga? (Source www.dictionary.com)

Yo-ga

Noun (sometimes initial capital letter )

1. a school of Hindu philosophy advocating and prescribing a course of physical and mental disciplines for attaining liberation from the material world and union of the self with the Supreme Being or ultimate principle.

2. any of the methods or disciplines prescribed, esp. a series of postures and breathing exercises practiced to achieve control of the body and mind, tranquillity, etc.

3. union of the self with the Supreme Being or ultimate principle.

OK, so, NO! A Christian should not practice Yoga! But wait! I’ve been doing yoga stretches for years! I didn’t know it was a religion. I thought it was an exercise…a physical exercise. Am I going to hell?

Let’s take a step back, give our heads a shake and reason together.

I saw a video that made a great argument by pointing out this: Christians take part in a ritual sacrament called Communion during which we eat bread and drink wine where the bread is symbolic of the body of Christ broken for you and the wine is symbolic of the blood of Christ shed for you. However, when we eat bread and drink wine at a cocktail party we are not practicing the Christian religion.

In the same way…when you stretch and do physical exercises designed by Yogis, you are not practicing the religion of Yoga. If you open yourself up to any spiritual exercise by allowing your mental state to become “empty”…well that’s just dumb but you still won’t be going to hell for it! If you start to believe that you are one with some supreme being that is not the God of the Holy Bible…well Jesus may have a problem with that! But that is between you and Jesus! I believe that if you have truly accepted Jesus Christ into your heart, have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and are living a repentant lifestyle then the Holy Spirit will convict you if you are outside of God’s will.

In conclusion, you are not going to hell because you do the same stretching exercises that a practitioner of yoga might use.
